(Spirit Lake)– Time is starting to wind down for low-income homeowners and renters to apply for a program that assists with home heating bills.
Officials with Upper Des Moines Opportunity say this coming April 30th is the deadline to apply for assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
The program is not designed to pay households total energy costs. Instead, it provides supplemental assistance based on total household income, household size, dwelling type, and type of heating fuel…among other factors.
Households who are over LIHEAP regular income guidelines may be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through the medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented, paid and non-reimbursable.
Anyone who has applied and has been approved the season cannot re-apply.
