(Spirit Lake)– The federal government is extending the deadline to apply for home heating assistance through its Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
Laurie Ruuf of the Spirit Lake office of Upper Des Moines Opportunity tells KUOO news the new deadline is May 29th.
Ruuf says that while the extended deadline will help a lot of people, that it’s important to note that the date when utilities can shut off service to delinquent customers is still April 1st. As a result, Ruuf says those who qualify for LIHEAP should contact her office now, well in advance of the new application deadline.
Ruuf adds it appears there’s plenty of funding available for the program this year, even though demand for it is up.
Those wanting more information or interested in applying should contact their local Upper Des Moines Opportunity office. The number for the Spirit Lake office is 336-1112.
The original application deadline was April 15th.
