(Spirit Lake)—Area letter carriers are once again gearing up for their annual food drive. Ken Henderson of the Spirit Lake Post Office says the annual event will be held this Saturday, May 11th. He says residents are requested to place their donations by their mailbox prior to the time of when their mail is usually delivered…(click here for comment.)
“Residents can put their donations in, on or by the mailbox and your letter carrier will come by and pick it up. That’s both city and rural carriers that will do that. Sometimes we get checks from people who just can’t get out. Checks should be made out to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Pantry here in Spirit Lake.”
Henderson says all the food that’s collected locally goes to the Upper Des Moines Opportunity Food Pantry. He says last year they collected 2,150 pounds of food, but he says that doesn’t really tell the story…(click here for comment.)
“It seems like when we first started the drive that people gave a lot of canned food so we had a lot of weight. It seems like over the last four or five years that people give more like Hamburger Helper and noodles and stuff that really doesn’t have weight to it, you know, and you know last year we collected probably five hampers of food. It was a lot of food but when it actually came down to the weight, you know, it’s not really a true indication of how much was really given, you know.”
For those who will be out of town this Saturday, donated food can be dropped off in the lobby of the Spirit Lake Post Office, or on the back dock of the post office this Saturday only.
