(Lake Park)– The man who’s been hired as the interim Superintendent at the Harris-Lake Park School tells KUOO news he’s excited about his new position. Les Douma tells KUOO news he’s been involved in education his entire life. His experience covers the gamut, including teacher, administrator, coach, superintendent, and later in life as a consultant and Chief Administrator of Northwest Area Education Agency. Douma says he’s looking forward to helping Harris-Lake Park transition from a full time superintendent to part-time…
“My role now is going to be, they are transitioning from a full time superintendent to a part time superintendent, and how will that look, and what will it be? And, you know, the high school Principal, or 7-12 Principal, Mr. Hiemstra, I’m sure he has some concerns about what that will look like. They hired a new full time elementary principal. They’ve positioned themselves extremely well, but now they need to have a part time superintendent role that’s successful and I need to work very, very hard and commit myself to making that part time role a success.”
Douma says even though he may be getting on in years, that he still has the vigor and is looking forward to the challenge…
“Many people may, especially the constituents and stakeholders inn the district, may wonder why a person at my age is going to be involved. I just want to ensure them that I will be involved and that I will work hard and I will be committed to the district and I want them to understand that I’m going to give the leadership that I think is necessary for the district and work very hard to support the good things that are occurring at Harris-Lake Park, because there are good things and it’s been a very successful school district over the history of the district and I look forward to being a part of it. But I want this to be successful and I want them to in the end, understand and appreciate my leadership because I want to partner with them. It’s not about any some individual coming in and providing any type of anything else except that I just want to partner with them.”
Douma says he plans to spend two to three days a week in the district. He begins July 1st.
