Law Enforcement To Have Increased Presence On Area Roads Over Next Several Days

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Motorists can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement officers on roads over the next several days. It’s in conjunction with the latest Special Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, being put on in cooperation with the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. Some 250 law enforcement agencies, including many in our area, are involved in the campaign, which begins Thursday (March 15th) and runs through March 18th, coinciding with the St. Patrick’s Holiday period.

Officers will not only be looking for drunk and impaired drivers, but also for those violating traffic laws. They say the goal is to reduce the number of traffic fatalities. A record number of 59 traffic fatalities occurred in January and February of this year. In 2011, the state recorded 363 traffic fatalities, a 66-year low.
