Lakeside Lab Speaker Series to feature a talk by State Geologist Dr. Keith Schilling July 30

July 29, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-The Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will continue Tuesday with a talk by the State Geologist. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Friends of Lakeside Lab’s Speaker Series will feature at talk by Dr. Keith Schilling, Director of the Iowa Geological Survey at The University of Iowa.
Schilling says he’ll discuss the Lake Diagnostic Study. “There’s been two aspects to this work. The one aspect is doing a regional study of all the Iowa Great Lakes, and we’ve installed roughly 40 monitoring wells including all the way up to Big Spirit down to Lower Gar, the entire system. The challenge with that, is that it’s also a very large area to try to understand how groundwater is flowing. So, in the middle of this project, we took at focused effort on a small area of the watershed around Spring Run. So, some land there that the DNR allowed us to do some work on and we installed some monitoring wells and measured conditions around the Spring Run Complex to try and understand if we can figure out groundwater flow in a small area that we could translate to the large area, the whole entire Great Lakes system. So, the focus of this presentation is going to be on The Spring Run area and what we’ve learned there.”
Dr. Schilling will speak at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall starting at 7 o’clock. The talk is free and open to the public.
