Lake Park Joins Hometown Pride Program

October 15, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Lake Park)– Lake Park is now part of a newly established initiative through the Keep Iowa Beautiful Program. The city council Monday evening approved Lake Park’s involvement in the Hometown Pride program. Mayor Matt Carstensen says it promotes residents getting involved in their community…

“How we get them involved in fundraising, how we get them to volunteer for, you know, different committees within the community itself or how they might become leaders, maybe a new council person or a mayor or somebody like that that wants to step up to the plate and are involved because of the positive aspects that it might bring to the community.”

He says participating communities can also go together to hire a “coach” to help accomplish goals and projects…

“We have a housing study that we’re moving forward on. We had a park proposal that was just approved by the council tonight and we need to do some fundraising, and those are the types of things that this program is all about, is how to get people more involved in that.”

Carstensen says Lake Park is one of nine communities in northwest Iowa participating in the Hometown Pride Program…

“Most of them are down in Buena Vista county but because of the invitation we attended the meeting and they welcomed us and we were glad that we were able to join that group. Like I say, most of them are down in Buena Vista county, lower part of Clay county.”

Carstensen says he first learned of the program through the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation. The city’s cost to participate over the 5-years will be $1,219.
