(Spirit Lake)– It’s 25 years in jail for a Spirit Lake man found guilty of attempted murder in the brutal attack of a Spirit Lake woman that took place in July of last year at her residence on Gary Avenue.
Judge John Duffy also ordered James Naujock to pay restitution of $2,251 to the Crime Victims Compensation Fund and to pay restitution to the victim, Val Waltz, at an amount yet to be determined.

Naujock also gave a statement in court, saying he and Waltz have a long history between the two of them, accusing her of a pattern of deception…something she has denied. Naujock showed no remorse in his statement…Click here to hear mp3 file
Defense attorney Ned Bjornstad commented on the sentence, telling KUOO news the judge should have been granted some options instead of having to go by guidelines established by the state…Click here to hear mp3 file
Now that the case is behind, Spirit Lake Police Chief Jeff Hanson issued a statement following this (Thurs.) morning’s sentencing, saying it it hadn’t been for the quick response of officers, they probably would have had a full-blown murder on their hands…Click here to hear mp3 file
