January Is National Blood Donor Month

January 02, 2026

(Spirit Lake)– LifeServe Blood Center will be at the Dickinson County Expo Center on January 27th from 1:00 to 6:00. Tim Paluch, who is Director of PR and Marketing for LifeServe says January is typically a slower month for blood donations…

“December and January are the slowest. Just because, you know, there’s just so many variables that get thrown into it. Vacations and holidays and weather. So, you know, if someone’s fifty over fifty on making an appointment, it’s a little icy out. They probably won’t go. So yeah, January January is a tough month sometimes.”

Paluch says this is a good opportunity to honor donors during the month of January…

“We kind of tied it into this idea of a new year, new you, New Year’s resolutions, and we’re giving away a Peloton exercise bike to one donor who donates anywhere at a LifeServe drive, either a donor center or a mobile drive in the month of January. In addition, a couple of runner ups will receive those under desks, walking treadmills, those kind of pads that you put under your desk, and you can kind of just stay active all day.”

Paluch says LifeServe is also launching the Universal Donor Society in the month of January for donors who are O Negative…

That is really for O negative donors, which is only about seven or eight percent of the population is O negative blood type, but it’s the universal blood type. So any patient, you know, in a car accident, in a trauma situation before you know what their blood type is, hospitals or EMS or whoever will give O negative blood. So it’s in high demand, you know, saves a lot of lives when minutes really matter. And we launched a new thing called the Universal Donor Society. The more times you donate o negative blood in twenty twenty six, the more rewards you get.”
