Federated REA is now accepting applications for its annual Youth Tour contest. Marketing and Communications Manager Andrea Christoffer, is hoping they get more applicants this year.
“Last year we only had six students apply, so I’m really hoping we can have more people apply for this because honestly, its more valuable than some of the scholarships that we offer and what it is. It’s held June 15th to the 20th and electric cooperative sponsored this leadership trip. So what you do is you get to fly out with a Minnesota delegation. There’s about 30 or 40 kids that do that. And then you spend nearly a week in Washington D.C.”
This is open to any freshman, sophomore, junior or senior within Jackson and Martin Counties and also Windom Area high school and Christoffer explains what students need to do to apply.
“And what there is, is just a very short application front and back to fill out. And then they have to write a three hundred word essay on something energy related. And it’s nice and broad. Maybe you can tie it into another class. And it’s more or less double spaced one page and you have a little bit of your opinion in there. And then what we do is we have a committee of three and they read through the applications and essays, score them. And then the top five finalists come in for interviews. And these applications and essays are due by January sixteenth.
The trip takes place June 15th through the 20th. Applications can be picked up from the high school counselor or you can contact Federated REA directly. You can also find the application on the federated rea website at federatedrea.coop. The application deadline is January 15th.
