Jackson County Voters To Decide Fate Of Local Sales Tax Measure

June 14, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– Voters in Jackson county this November will decide the fate of a measure that would implement a one percent local sales tax to help fund a new $41.2 million law enforcement center and government center currently under construction. If approved, it’s estimated the sales tax would bring in up to $17.5 million over a 25-year period. Local sales taxes paid by nonresidents would contribute about $5.5 million toward the project, according to information from the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Community Vitality.

The county’s Government Center East Building was recently demolished to make way for the new facility adjacent to the courthouse in Jackson. It will house county law enforcement, including a new jail, and government services.

The county plans to use a combination of cash reserves and existing revenue from wind production and property taxes to pay for the majority of project..
