Jackson City Council Paves The Way For Housing Project To Get Underway

April 22, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Jackson City Council earlier this week paved the way for a housing project to get underway in that city. Dave Schmidt of the Jackson Economic Development Commission told the council the five homes would be constructed in partnership with a program called “UCAP”, and that the project would be partially funded by grants that would help reduce the $250,000 price tag to homebuyers. Schmidt told the council the homes would be built on 10 lots in an area of Jackson known as “Sunset View North”…

“We haven’t seen a lot of action on those lots right now, and its a great opportunity to take five lots, considering we normally build two or three houses per year in Jackson, and we could look at getting five houses build next summer. We would build three starting in the spring, sell those in the summer, then start the next houses and finish them in the fall.”

Schmidt says now it’s a matter of attracting developers…

“So if we step in and we do a project, we do some spec homes we do some print homes, we do something, are they gonna sell, UCAP is gonna do the leg work for us, they’re gonna run the project they’re gonna sell it and if this project works, we’ve now proved the market to other developers and they’re gonna say OK, investing in Jackson is a good idea, and now we’re gonna have more options for other housing projects.”

While the council did express some concerns over the proposal, they did vote unanimously to donate the city-owned lots so the project can get started.
