It Could Be Awhile Yet Before Cannabis Sales Could Take Place In Jackson

August 16, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Jackson, Mn.)– The Jackson City Council Tuesday evening held a public hearing on a moratorium that would make the sale of cannabis products such as smokeable material, THC gummies and infused drinks illegal in Jackson until January of 2025. City Administrator Matt Skaret says the goal for the moratorium isn’t to challenge a cannabis business that might want to begin the process of setting their business up in the city, but to allow the new Office of Cannabis Management in Minnesota to get set up with rules and regulations…

“This only goes until January 1st 2025, and this is so we can let the dust settle here and figure out what the rules and regulations are from the state, there are a lot of rules and regulations that haven’t been made yet, this Office of Cannabis Management hasn’t even been established yet. There’s a lot of variables and a lot of unknowns right now.”

Skaret says that this moratorium could be discontinued by the council at any time, and that it serves as a stopgap between steady government oversight and loopholes that could see private sellers selling from the back of a van or other non-permanent building.

Recreational marijuana use in Minnesota effectively became legal in that state August 1st.
