ISU Extension & Outreach To Hold Farmland Lease Meetings Throughout The Region

July 06, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will hold its annual series of farmland lease meetings in early August. Gary Wright, a Farm Management Specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, says the workshops will cover a number of factors, including the latest lease trends with lease rates…

“It comes out about the same time every year and we’ll be reviewing that. And then we’ll relate that back to the land value survey information we got a couple of months ago, before that. Those two items kind of go hand in hand. And then we’ll be reviewing just general, what’s going on with that ’23 crop year, right now. It may be a case where by the time we have those meetings, maybe the moisture levels will be improving and the outlooks will be, they’re basically pretty favorable right now in term of yields. We try to have those meetings as soon as we can, right in front of the September 1 deadline. In the state of Iowa if you’re going to terminate your lease to have it legally valid. And then we’ll also have most current market information, market price information, for corn and soybeans and livestock as well.”

Wright says operating margins and cost of production will also be discussed, along with some legal and tax updates…

“A fairly significant change at least from the tax side, for landowners. And so we will review that. That will make this meeting a little different than in the past. Beyond that, again, the biggest share of the land in the state of Iowa now is clearly being farmed by people who do not own it, and as a result that lease business transaction is a big deal. It’s important to the commerce of the state of Iowa, so we’ll talk about topics related to that.”

The workshops will be held August 1st-10th at nine different locations throughout northwest Iowa. There is a charge of $20 per individual or $30 per couple for those who sign up at least two days prior to the workshop date. The fee includes the cost of materials.
