ISU Extension, Milford & Spirit Lake Public Libraries Offering Food Preservation Classes

August 30, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dickinson County is teaming up with the Milford and Spirit Lake Public Libraries to offer classes on home food preservation. Sue Boettcher, Dickinson County Extension Adult Program Director, says each one will cover a certain topic of food preservation…

“September 14th they’re going to be doing salsa making basics. You get to take a home a jar of salsa that you preserved using a hot water bath canning method. And then on September 21st, it’s pressure canning and freezing, so you’re going to learn safe methods for pressure canning. Some people are always kind of afraid of that pressure canner, and so you’ll learn some good techniques there. You’re going to preserve some vegetables that evening that you’ll be able to take home with you. And those are both at the Spirit Lake Public Library. Those classes are limited to six people. And then on September 27th it’s pickle making and pickle products. You’re going to find out all about that type of product for canning and also take some home with you. And on October 18th it’s jam making and dehydrating. So you’re going to learn safe methods to preserve jams and dehydrate foods in this jam session and take home the fruit of your labors. In Milford, they are actually in the Community Building so those classes there can be 10 people in them because there’s more stoves there.”

Pre-registration is required within at least a week of which ever class you would like to attend…

“It is 40 dollars per class, but they can sign up for whichever one they would like. It’s not a series, they don’t have to take more than one. And we do have some financial assistance if that 40 dollars is a little cost prohibitive for you, so if that is the case please give me a call at our office at 336-3488. Otherwise there are registration links on our flyers that you’ll see out and about, or you can find that on our Facebook page or on our website.”

The classes will be put on by food and health specialists from ISU Extension and Outreach.
