Iowa’s Tax Free Weekend Going On Today (Fri.) & Saturday

August 02, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– Back-to-school shoppers may especially want to take advantage of Iowa’s Sales Tax-Free Weekend today (Fri) and tomorrow (Sat). Iowa State University Extension Family Well-being Specialist Carol Ehlers says back-to-school shopping is the 2nd largest family expenditure of the year…

“So there is a need to look for any opportunity that’s out there to save some money. The focus is only on tax-exempt savings for clothing and for shoes, and your purchase needs to be for any one individual item under 100 dollars.”

Go to the Iowa Department of Revenue website to find the list of tax-free items today (Fri) and tomorrow (Sat). A few exempt items include backpacks, sports equipment, jewelry, as well as watches and watchbands.

Ehlers suggests individuals and families take an inventory of items they already have…

“And that might sound kind of crazy or daunting but we really want to make purchases for maybe what’s really needed right away that’s called a necessity, and/or be thinking about when the temperature drops and gets cooler, what are the boots or sweaters that perhaps I need?”

Ehlers says families spend an average of 864 dollars on back-to-school items, almost as much as the amount spent for the winter holidays. Ehlers represents 12 northwest Iowa counties with ISU Extension.
