Iowa Lakeside Laboratory to offer Training for CLAMP Volunteers in May

April 21, 2023 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-Registration is open for CLAMP training at Lakeside Lab. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Iowa Lakeside Laboratory will offer training sessions for volunteers with the Cooperative Lakes Area Monitoring Project , or CLAMP.
Coordinator Megan Vigdal says, the program involves taking samples from area lakes. “We are going to be entering our 24th sampling season this summer. Basically, it’s a citizen science program in conjunction with Iowa Lakeside Laboratory and we have 27 sampling sites on 9 lakes in the Iowa Great Lakes, and this includes Silver Lake, Center Lake and Little Swan Lake, as well as the main chain. We have volunteers that go out and collect water samples for us 7 times a summer, and then they bring them back to Lakeside Lab and they get analyzed in the Water Quality Lab for a few different things that help us monitor the health of the lakes.”
She notes that several training sessions will be offered in May. “This year, we’re going to have 2 on Saturday, May 20. One at 10 am and one at 1 pm, and then we’re going to have one on Tuesday, May 30 at 10 am. These are going to be at the Waitt Laboratory Building at Lakeside Lab, and those are going to be all identical sessions, so you do not need to attend all of them, just one of them will do.”
