Iowa Lakes Community College starts Pollinator Paradise Project

May 10, 2022 Becky Thoreson

(Estherville)-Iowa Lakes Community College has started a Pollinator Paradise Project on the Estherville Campus. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Led by the Biology and Environmental Studies programs, Iowa Lakes Community College is developing a pollinator paradise on the Estherville Campus.

Biology Professor Brian Bristow explains. “Back in about January, it had come across the desk of somebody in foundations, that there was a Community Betterment Grant that was available. It had some emphasis on pollinators and bee keeping. Drew Howing, the Environmental Professor, and I talked about it and we came up with a few ideas. We decided well, why wouldn’t we plant a very pollinator-friendly prairie patch and walkway with fruit and berry bushes and apple trees and those kinds of things. Basically, serve three purposes: don’t mow as much grass, beautify the campus, and and provide some habitat for those critical pollinators that we all need.”

He notes that work is underway for the project. “In the next couple of weeks we’ll see quite a few changes going on. We’ll do some sod management first, and the college has committed to building a really nice walkway through it and so, as that gets completed, then we can start placing some of our fruit trees along the way.”
