Iowa Insurance Division Begins Process To Reimburse Some Customers Of A Former Emmetsburg Funeral Home

September 06, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– The Iowa Insurance Division is beginning the process to reimburse customers of a former Emmetsburg funeral home.

The Iowa Insurance Division was appointed as receiver of the Joyce Funeral Home on June 5th, 2020. State officials sought the receivership when an investigation revealed a number of deposits that could not be matched to a burial, alleging that thousands of dollars in pre-need purchase agreements had been sold and the money had not been placed in trust, as required by Iowa law. The receivership action followed a previous cease and desist order issued in October of 2019. The Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau also investigated and filed criminal complaints against Andrew Joyce, charging him with one count of ongoing criminal conduct, one count of theft in the 1st degree, one count of theft in the 2nd degree and one count of failure to trust preneed funeral services.

Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen says letters have been sent via the U.S. Postal Service to known victims. He’s urging other victims that have not yet come forward to submit a claim online or through his office.
