Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club to hold Move for Mental Health Walk on August 24

August 23, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Spirit Lake)-The Iowa Great Lakes Rotary Club has partnered with the Dickinson County Behavioral Health Coalition to hold its Second Annual Move for Mental Health Walk on Saturday, August 24th.  The event will start at Tatanka Ska Trace Trailhead in Spirit Lake and will feature 2.5k, 5k and 10k team walks.

Teams of 2 or 4 can register online and registrations will also be taken on site starting at 7:30 a.m. with the walk beginning at 8 o’clock Saturday morning.

“The event is about moving in a way that feels good, both for your body and mind,” says Kathy Fahy, one of the event organizers with Iowa Great Lakes Rotary. “We don’t care if you go fast. We care that you stay together and enjoy the company of the friends or family you are walking with and the beauty of our trail system.”

Proceeds raised by Iowa Great Lakes Rotary will be used to provide behavioral health curriculum and speakers in all Dickinson County schools. The project is in partnership with the Dickinson County Behavioral Health Coalition. The Coalition was formed as the result of input from the recently conducted public health assessments to help raise awareness of mental health issues and resources that are available in the Iowa Great Lakes area.

“Together we’re meeting with partners across different sectors, such as school districts, many different behavioral health providers, therapists, and the hospital,” said Katy Burke with Dickinson County Public Health. “We’re really excited to build these different outreach activities and get people connected to the support they need.”
