Iowa Great Lakes & Points To The North & West Escape Worse Of Blizzard

March 19, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Great Lakes and points to the north and west have escaped the brunt of a blizzard today (Wed.) Visibility locally was very poor from 7:00 am until about 9:30 am but quickly improved after that.

Conditions quickly go down hill, though, once you go south. Very poor visibility was still being reported mid-morning pretty much along and south of Highway 18. A stretch of Highway 71 near Sioux Rapids was shut down awhile this (Wed.) morning due to some jackknifed semi’s.

Snowfall amounts locally were nowhere near original predictions, with only about an inch at the KUOO studios.

Forecasters say the low pressure system responsible for the wintry weather moved further south than expected, sparing the Iowa Great Lakes from the worst conditions.
