Iowa DNR To Stock Trout Again This Fall At A Number Of Sites, Including One Locally

October 10, 2025

(Spencer)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will be stocking trout again this fall at a number of locations throughout the state, including one in northwest Iowa. DNR officials say 1,000 to 2,000 rainbow trout will be released at each of those sites, including Stolley Pond in Spencer. The release there is scheduled for 1:00 pm Saturday, November 1st.

The DNR says the stocking is done in the fall when cooler water temperatures can support trout.

The program is made possible by sales of the trout fee. Anglers need a valid fishing license and pay the fee in order to possess trout.

The daily limit is 5 trout per licensed angler with a possession limit of 10. Children 15 or younger can fish for trout with a properly licensed adult, but must limit their catch to one daily limit. The child can purchase a trout fee which will allow them to keep their own limit.
