Iowa DNR To Conduct Prescribed Burns

March 02, 2026

(Undated)– The Iowa DNR will be conducting a number of prescribed burns in the region this spring. They’ll be taking place on wildlife management areas managed by the DNR and its Great Lakes Wildlife Unit in Dickinson, O’Brien and Lyon counties.

Specifically the burning will be taking place at Spring Run, Cayler Prairie, Christopherson Slough, Diamond Lake, Dugout Creek, Hales Slough, Garlock Slough, Kettleson Hogsback, Okoboji View, Silver Lake and Welch Lake in Dickinson county; Waterman Prairie in O’Brien county, and the Big Sioux River in Lyon county.

DNR officials say the prescribed burns are important to improve wildlife habitat and to control invasive plant species as well as reducing wildfire potential. The burns typically are conducted between mid-March and mid-May when weather conditions allow.
