Iowa Climatologist Says Tuesday’s Rain Was Beneficial In Relieving Drought

December 14, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Ames)– Tuesday’s rain was good news for Iowa’s drought conditions. Iowa State Climatologist Dr. Justin Glisan said it will be helpful next year…

“We’re in the second driest month of the year so we typically would expect, you know, snowfall moving forward but not a lot of precipitation, so luckily our soils haven’t frozen, and this is extremely good news for getting some moisture in the tank for next growing season.”

Glisan says the rain will help attract more rain in the spring…

“Having moisture at the low levels, relative humidity, but also soil moisture, helps feed the transient thunderstorms that will come through and those thunderstorms are the driving precipitation as we get into May, June, July, August, so spring into summer.”

Glisan says, however, most of Iowa is still in drought.

A little more than 8 tenths of an inch of rain fell Tuesday at the KUOO studios.
