(Estherville)– Trustees of Iowa Lakes Community College Tuesday accepted a proposal that will allow the college to offer intercollegiate swimming as a sport with an anticipated start date in the fall of 2011. Student-athletes would be housed at the Emmetsburg campus where they would use an olympic-size pool in the Smith Wellness Center. The goal is to have 24 students recruited for the sport–12 each for a women’s and men’s team.
Trustees also Tuesday held a public hearing on the proposed construction of a Tech building at the Emmetsburg campus. The low bid from Henningsen Construction of $433,200 for the building shell was accepted by trustees. Construction tech students will complete the building.
The project will be supported in part by Accelerated Career Education infrastructure funding which has been submitted to the Iowa Department of Economic Development for authorization. Work on the building is expected to get underway this spring.
Trustees also approved a proposal to offer a voluntary early retirement package for staff members. College employees who are atleast 55 years of age and who have worked at the college atleast 10 years will be eligible for the option.
