November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– Iowa Lakes Community College will play a critical role in an initiative through the Iowa Governor’s Office to improve the teaching of science, technology, engineering and math to students, no matter what part of Iowa they live. To accomplish that, a group commissioned by Governor Terry Branstad has identified six Iowa universities and colleges that will serve as regional hubs to implement the program. Iowa Lakes Community College has been selected as the hub for northwest Iowa. ILCC President Val Newhouse tells KUOO news the fact Iowa Lakes has already been doing some work along that line is what resulted in them being named a hub…(Click here to hear comment from ILCC President Val Newhouse…)

The goal of the program, according to Newhouse, is to not only help in retaining and attracting businesses needing highly skilled workers, but also to provide adequate skills to young people to hopefully help keep them from leaving the state…(Click here to hear comment from ILCC President Val Newhouse…)

Newhouse goes on to tell KUOO news Iowa Lakes Community College already has some events planned for students and educators alike…(Click here to hear comment from ILCC President Val Newhouse…).

In addition to Iowa Lakes Community College, hubs will also be located at the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, Southwestern Community College in Creston and Drake University. The University of Iowa and Kirkwood Community College will work together for the sixth.
