(Spencer)– A popular course offering at Iowa Lakes Community is expanding to another campus.
Janet Gentle, Massage Therapy Program Coordinator, tells KUOO news the program will be offered at an additional location beginning with the spring term January 9th…(click here for comment.) “It is currently at the Spencer campus but we have a new facility that they’ve finished over at Algona where we’re going to have the night program. It will run four nights a week. It’s an 11 month program and this is going to give people that want to work an opportunity to go to school in the evening.”
When it comes to training to become a massage therapist, Gentles says it involves more than you might think…(click here for comment.) “They first have to learn anatomy and physiology as well as medical terminology, swedish massage strokes. Then we get into all the different modalities. We have a lot of different things like spa, reflexology. We work with geriatrics, we work with pregnancy, we work with sports, deep tissue. Just a wide variety of classes for the student to learn.”
And there’s good news for those thinking about getting into the field…(click here for comment.) “There’s an increase in the demand for the massage therapist because it has such a wide variety of areas that they can go into. And the education they are, they’ve got new guidelines thaty they’re trying to make sure that the massage therapist is well qualified, so because of the education of the public these days they are beginning to look at massage therapy more.”
The deadline to sign up for the spring semester is quickly approaching. Anyone with questions or wanting more information pertaining to the Massage Therapy program should contact the Spencer campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.
