(Milford)– A major project by the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District is underway, and officials say things will be kicking into an even higher gear in the next week or so. Most of the work is taking place in the area of 28th Street and Sportsman’s Drive in Milford and 202nd Street and Emerald Pines Drive in Arnolds Park. Traffic signage is going up in those areas and officials say there will be an increase in construction material deliveries and equipment.
Steve Anderson, Superintendent of the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District, spoke to us about the project, known as the “Center Core Project”, back in December…
“Contractors have moved in and they’re going to be starting that, and that’s replacing a 30 inch pipe. It isn’t at capacity but it’s at the end of its useful life because of the materials that were available at the time that project went in. We’re putting in two 36 inch pipes side by side that will be able to take all of the flow. We’ll be able to move flow back and forth for maintenance purposes. The materials we’re using are a more robust material for uses with wastewater and so we expect a minimum of 50 years but it could be as high as 100 years on that.”
Anderson says the 1.4 miles of gravity sewer pipe collects about two-thirds of the wastewater flow from the Iowa Great Lakes Area to the wastewater treatment plant. The $24 million project is slated for completion in 2027.
