IGL Sanitary District Pleading With Residents To Cutback On Water Usage As Wastewater Bypasses Continue

June 21, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Milford)– A number of cities along with the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District, are once again bypassing wastewater. Steve Anderson of the Sanitary District says the treatment plant is completely overwhelmed. He says the Department of Natural Resources is aware of it…

“We are bypassing. I know multiple cities are actually bypassing into the lakes right now. The DNR is aware of everything that’s going on so we’re working non-stop to try to, you know, get ahead of it and try to keep water moving out there, so.”

Anderson urges EVERYONE to cut back on water usage for as much as possible over the next 24 to 36 hours…

“We know people have got to live and everything, but any type of water reduction we can do right now heading into the night period would be great. It would help take that extra water flow off the sewer system.”

Anderson says the Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District has been seeing issues with some of their lift station pumps because of the extremely high volume. He says crews have been working around the clock trying to keep an eye on things.
