(Milford)– The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District says it is no longer bypassing wastewater. Director Steve Anderson says it’s last bypass ended Monday.
He says even though the Okoboji’s are still above flood stage, the sanitary sewer collection system is now able to keep up with flows. Anderson notes, however, 64 lift stations are running near capacity and that the wastewater treatment plant is running about double of the normal flows for this time of the year. He attributes that to flooded structures that are still connected to the system along with sump pumps and other illegal connections.
Anderson says any homes found with an illegal connection will be fined $1,000 each day the connection is in place and the sewer system is air tight and water tight.
He says sump pump hoses discharging into a floor drain are also considered as an illegal connection and will be fined in the same manner.
