(Lake Park)– A two-vehicle collision Friday on Highway 9 between Spirit Lake and Lake Park sent two people to the hospital.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says Glenda Reinke of Spirit Lake was eastbound near 170th Avenue when she fell asleep at the wheel. The 2003 Pontiac she was driving crossed the center line. Authorities say Patrick Parrot of Spirit Lake was driving a 2004 Pontiac westbound and observed the vehicle driven by Reinke crossing the center line. Deputies say Parrot attempted to swerve left to avoid a collision. About that time, authorities say Reinke woke up and tried to veer back into her lane. The two vehicles collided, with the impact sending Parrot’s vehicle into the south ditch. Reinke’s vehicle came to rest in the eastbound lane of the highway.
Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. Parrot was treated for incapacitating while Reinke sustained minor injuries.
About $15,000 in damage was estimated to the vehicle driven by Reinke; $20,000 in damage was estimated to the one driven by Parrott.
The crash took place shortly after 7:30 a.m.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, the Spirit Lake Police Department, Lake Park Fire Department, Lake Park Rescue, the Lakes Area Extrication Unit, and the Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and paramedics.
Authorities say the collision is still under investigation.
