The Iowa State Patrol says 22-year-old Clayton Noll of Spencer was driving a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix westbound when he crossed the center line, colliding nearly head-on with an eastbound 2004 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 55-year-old Donald Schmalen of Sheldon.

Schmalen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Noll was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital with unknown injuries.

The collision took place shortly after 7:00 a.m. Monday.

Authorities say it remains under investigation.
