(Spirit Lake)—Hundreds of people attended this past Saturday’s dedication of the newly renovated Memorial Park. Spirit Lake Mayor Blaine Andera was among those speaking at the event…(click here for comment.) “It’s my pleasure today and it’s with great honor that we officially dedicate this new shelter house at Memorial Park as the Clayton Seeman Memorial Shelter House. Clayton was a long time employee of the city of Spirit Lake, serving the citizens of the community for over 24 years. Clayton was a hard working, dedicated employee. He was a joy to work with and he took great pride in the beautification of the city.”
Another key component of the renovated park in the splash pad. Funds for that raised by the Spirit Lake Noon Kiwanis Club, of which Ryan Schmidt is President…(click here for comment.) “I’d like to thank the city, the community and everybody involved in making this a reality for our kids and for the future of Spirit Lake.”
Schmidt also recognized a Kiwanian that came up with the idea for the splash pad…(click here for comment.) “You know the splash pad really was a dream that went to a vision that went to a reality. There’s definitely one person within our club I think that played a very strong role in that. And what we did was, you know Kiwanis is a global organization. We teamed up with Unicef to basically help eliminate neo natal tetanus within the world. It’s a huge deal that kids have to deal with on a daily basis. Luckily in our country we don’t have to deal with it as much. In other countries it’s a huge deal. So what we did to honor our own Theresa Beck we got her a Walter A. Zeller medallion. And with that medallion she saved 695 lives and eliminated that.”
The event also served as an opportunity to update the community on the Blue Zones project. Jason Harrington is the president and CEO of Lakes Regional Healthcare and is also the chairman of the local Blue Zones inititiative…(click here for comment.) “We just had our action plan approved by Healthways and Blue Cross, so you’ll see a lot more activity in the Iowa Great Lakes from the Blue Zones group. Second of all we have our first restaurant designated Blues Zones Restaurant in Hey Good Cookies. Rabab’s is working on theirs, Prairie Chick is working on theirs. We’ve got many employers who are talking about how do we change our workplaces so our employees can make the healthy choice the easy choice. We’ve got two grocery stores in the community that are days away from being being designated Blue Zone project designated sites.”
Saturday’s event was held as part of the Spirit Lake Days celebration.
