Highway 71 Checkpoint Results In More Than 100 Vehicles Being Stopped

(Spencer)– The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says a vehicle safety checkpoint conducted this past Thursday was a big success.

Eight agencies and 26 officers participated in the checkpoint, resulting in more than 100 vehicles, drivers and passengers being checked for compliance for things such as equipment, driver’s licenses, active warrants, sobriety, drugs and weapons.

Authorities say three people were arrested for narcotics and driving violations; 18 citations were issued along with 58 warnings.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the checkpoint by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Estherville, Lake Park, Sheldon, Spencer and Spirit Lake Police Departments.

The Iowa State Patrol, Clay County Emergency Management, Clay County Attorney’s Office, Clay County Secondary Roads and the Iowa Department of Transportation Maintenance Division also provided assistance.
