Storm Lake –
Iowa Highway 7 near Newell in Buena Vista county was reopened Thursday afternoon. The section of highway had been closed due to a chemical spill from a semi-trailer truck accident on Wednesday.
The truck had rolled in the accident, and several chemical containers were ejected into a ditch and began leaking.
An environmental company from Des Moines says the spill involved nearly 1,900 gallons of sodium hydroxide from six containers, along with 55 gallons of chlorine bleach and 7 gallons of charcoal solution. The company will continue to clean up the contaminated soil on Friday. The highway is expected to remain open during the process.
