(Spencer)– A head-on collision this (Monday) morning on 100th Avenue just north of Moneta sent four people to Spencer Hospital.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Kristin Biery of Sutherland was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Venture van southbound when she crossed the center line and collided with a 1986 Ford pickup driven by 60-year-old Billy Bass of Sheldon, who was northbound. Deputies say the pickup was pulling a trailer loaded with scrap iron.
The impact caused both vehicles to go into the east ditch, with the trailer remaining partially on the traveled portion of the roadway.
Bass and a passenger in his vehicle, 66-year-old Burton Johnson of Sheldon, along with Biery and a passenger in her vehicle, 57-year-old Gary Cooper of Primghar, were all taken to Spencer Hospital. Bass and Cooper were listed in fair to serious condition with lower extremity injuries listed as incapacitating but not life threatening; Biery and Johnson were life-flighted to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. They are listed in serious condition with upper torso and head injuries, also described as incapacitating but non-life threatening.
Authorities say the collision remains under investigation and that charges are pending.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Spencer, Everly and Hartley Fire and Rescue units, Spencer Hospital ambulance, Clay County Emergency Management, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the North Liberty Police Department.
