November 22, 2014

(Sheldon)—A head-on collision on Highway 18 near the Hy-Vee store in Sheldon yesterday (Sun.) claimed the life of a Sheldon woman.

The Iowa State Patrol says 24-year-old Justin Hassebroek of Sheldon was driving a 2003 Mercury westbound when he fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle crossed the center line and collided headon with a 2011 Suzuki driven by 83-year-old Joan Vanrooyen of Sheldon.

Vanrooyen was pronounced dead a short time after the crash; Hassebroek sustained non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in his vehicle, 23-year-old Justin Mulder of Sheldon, was seriously injured. Both were transported to the Sheldon hospital.

Damage estimates to the vehicles weren’t available.

The collision took place around 8:44 a.m.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by Sheldon Fire and Rescue, the Sheldon EMS, the Sheldon Police Department and the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.
