(Emmetsburg)– A harvest-related mishap has claimed the life of a Mallard man.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says rescue crews and deputies were called to a corn field shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4800 mile of 420th Avenue west of Mallard. Upon arriving, they found 58-year-old Dennis Backstrom of Mallard trapped in the corn head of a John Deere combine.
Family, friends and responders attempted to free Backstrom, but were unsuccessful in their efforts. Backstrom was pronounced dead on the scene a short while later by the Palo Alto County Deputy Medical Examiner.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office, Palo Alto County Ambulance, the Mallard Fire Department and Mallard First Responders were called to the scene.
