(Lakefield, Mn.)– Good progress is being reported with the harvest. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services of Lakefield says quite a few soybeans have gone out of the fields in the past week…
“I think we’re probably down to about 25 percent left. A lot of producers are done. But overall these last couple of days have had a lot of beans knocked out so I think producers are pretty happy with the conditions that they’ve had so far.”
Nesseth says some producers have even started picking corn…
“There’s not a big rush to it, but a lot of that earlier corn, 100 day or less, is getting down to 20 percent or below. I had one producer say it was down to 15 or 16 percent, you know, in some cases there, but the later corn that’s in the mid 20’s to upper 20’s and so I see some of that getting going in the next week or so, but good progress.”
When it comes to yields, Nesseth says soybeans are lacking, but he says it’s a different story for corn…
“In the corn it looks like we’re going to have a lot of 180 to 200 bushel or better. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if we pretty much meet our APH’s or above on the corn. On the soybeans, you know, it’s just a little more disappointing there. I think a lot of 45 to 55 bushel soybeans and there will be some on both sides of that. Some occasional reports of beans being over 70 bushel where things just kind of lined up perfectly for that particular area of the field but there’s been some disappointments, too, where we’ve gotten less than 40 bushels.”
Nesseth says disease issues and lack of rain are the primary issues behind the lower soybean yields.
