Hartley Man Escapes Injuries When Auger Pulls Down Power Lines

November 22, 2014

(Orange City)– A Hartley man escaped injury in a freak accident Monday in Sioux county.

The Iowa State Patrol says 48-year-old Daniel Miller of Hartley was driving a 2005 International truck with a bulk feed box and auger on it. Troopers say the truck had just left a field drive and that the auger had been left upright. They say Miller couldn’t see the auger due to the feed box.

Troopers say Miller was southbound on Sioux County Road L-14 when the auger struck an overhead power line owned by MidAmerican Energy. The line was pulled to the south, which caused two utility poles on both sides of the road to bend and break off, falling to the ground.

10-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the truck driven by Miller; five thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the utility poles and power lines.

Some people living in the vicinity of the crash lost power for awhile as a result of the downed lines.

Miller was cited for excessive height.

The incident took place around 2:30 p.m. Monday.
