(Lake Park)– The Harris-Lake Park School Board has a new member. Meeting in special session this (Fri.) afternoon, the board voted unanimously to appoint Kayla Updike to a seat left vacant by a recent resignation. Board President Ebony Rahe tells KUOO news Updike was one of three people who applied to fill the vacant seat. She says they were thrilled by the interest and the caliber of those who applied…
“Obviously they all three kind of had different strengths to present and obviously we’re just looking at who can long term provide some insight as a board member and Kayla Updike is who we appointed. She’s got one child coming into the elementary and a younger child after that, so I think that brings a positive thing to our board and really kind of gives some more insight from the elementary standpoint as right now our board currently does not, a lot of our children are going to be out of the elementary soon. So that’s kind of one thing that was a positive and one reason why we appointed her.”
Updike will fill out the remainder of the term of the vacant District 4 seat and could opt to seek a full term in the November, 2025 election…
“Her position will go to 2025, so she fills Lisa Carstensen’s role who took a teaching job within our school district and was no longer eligible to be on the school board, but we’re excited to have Lisa as part of the staff here and that will be a great addition come this fall.”
It comes at a crucial time as the district will soon be constructing a new elementary school adjacent to the existing Middle School High School facility.
