Hands Free Law Goes Into Effect Tuesday (July 1st) In Iowa

June 29, 2025

(Undated)– Another reminder: Iowa’s hands free law takes effect this coming Tuesday, July 1st.

The new law makes it illegal to hold your phone, even while at a stop light. It also prohibits the following: typing, scrolling or swiping; entering addresses into a GPS; streaming videos or making video calls; reading/viewing texts, videos or social media; and calling or texting without hands-free/voice activation.

Items that ARE allowed (hands-free only) include: making calls or sending texts through voice command; using a speaker phone; blue-tooth connected devices such as car systems, earpieces and adapters; mounted devices using voice input only; and auxiliary cable connections for audio.

Authorities say the bottom line is that if you’re holding your phone, scrolling it or manually using it, it’s illegal under the new law.
