(Sioux City)– A man who pleaded guilty to illegally re-entering the United States from Guatemala has been sentenced to four months in federal prison.
36-year-old Edwin Santos-Vasquez admitted at a plea hearing that he had been deported from the U.S. back on July 27th, 2007.
Agents with the Nobles county, Minnesota Drug Task Force were investigating individuals believed to be in the U.S. illegally. A subsequent investigation revealed Santos-Vasquez was a citizen of Guatemala with a previous Homeland Securities Investigation arrest and prior removal from the U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE officers, discovered Santos-Vasquez was living in Worthington, Minnesota and was employed by a construction company in Storm Lake. On June 21st of this year ICE officers traveled to Storm Lake and found Santos-Vasquez at a construction site, where he was taken into custody.
