(Arnolds Park)– Grant applications are now open for the 2024 Walleye Weekend in the Iowa Great Lakes.
This year’s event kicks off Saturday, May 4th. Over 2,000 anglers from more than 15 states will be vying for their chance to snag one of the ten tagged walleye worth a grand prize of $42,000 this year. Each year a portion of the proceeds from the event are donated back to the community in the form of grants for projects that benefit fishing. Kylie Zankowski of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce…
“Anyone that’s a 501c3 nonprofit and has an emphasis on angling in the Iowa Great Lakes Area is encouraged to apply for our grant applications through Iowa Great Lakes Walleye Weekend. So we’ve got quite a few great local organizations or projects in the area and we really encourage them to take advantage of this grant program that we’ve got for Walleye Weekend every year.”
Grant applications can be found at okobojichamber.com or by contacting the Chamber office…
“Applications for the grants fall right in line with Walleye Weekend registration, so all applications must be in by midnight on May 3rd and then we will announce those grant recipients following Walleye Weekend.”
Zankowski says last year they were able to award $20,000 in grant funding…
“And that was split between five local organizations that received different amounts of funding based off their projects and their applications. We’re really excited to continue giving funds to these local project especially since they have such a strong emphasis on angling, whether it’s water quality, youth fishing camps, different things that they need to make sure that angling and the angling community remains strong in the Iowa Great Lakes Area.”
Also a reminder that registration is currently underway for those looking to participate in this year’s Walleye Weekend.
