(Undated)– The so-called “grandparent scam” is once again making the rounds.
It involves elderly persons receiving a call from someone purporting to be their grandchild in trouble with the law. The so-called grandchild impersonator claims to have been booked into jail and requests money be wired to bail them out.
The caller will sometimes hand the phone over to another person claiming to a police officer or a bail bondsman.
Authorities say anyone who gets such a call should immediately become suspicious. You should ask questions to verify the caller’s identity and contact the parents or other family members to find out if the person in question is actually in trouble.
And they say you should never give bank account or credit card information to anyone you don’t know.
If you feel you’ve been a victim of such a scam you should contact your local law enforcement agency.
There have been reports of such calls locally. In fact, KUOO news has learned of an 82-year-old woman from our area that was victimized and reportedly had her savings account drained as a result.
