(Dickens)– A Spencer man was killed today (Tues.) when he got trapped in a grain bin.
The victim was identified as 51-year-old Leo Balk of Spencer.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says authorities were called to the Maxyield Cooperative elevator in Dickens shortly before 9:30 this (Tues.) morning. They say Balk and two other employees had been working in the grain bin. They say Balk was trying to knock down a column of grain in the bin when he got buried in it.
Efforts to rescue Balk were unsuccessful.
Authorities say he had been employee with Maxyield Cooperative for several years.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Dickens Fire and Rescue, Ruthven Fire and Rescue, Spencer Fire and Rescue, Spencer Ambulance and paramedics, the Spencer Police Department and employees of Maxyield Cooperative.
