Gas Pump Fire Causes Tense Moments

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A close call Monday evening at a convenience store on the north side of Spencer.

Firefighters were called to Cargo Express on north Grand Avenue after a woman who had just fueled up her vehicle pulled away from the pump with the fuel nozzle still in her tank. The force caused the fuel pump to tip over and start on fire.

Fire Chief Doug Duncan says an emergency shut-off valve prevented additional gasoline from getting to the pump, allowing firefighters to quickly put out the fire, which was contained to the pump itself.

No injuries were reported.

Officials say any gas that spilled from the pump was likely burned off.
