Gas Leak Results In Small Part Of Downtown Spirit Lake Being Cordoned Off

May 26, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A natural gas leak this (Thurs.) afternoon in a business resulted in a portion of downtown Spirit Lake being cordoned off. Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KUOO news they responded to the VFW at 918 Lake Street shortly after 2:00 pm after getting a report of a natural gas leak inside the building…

“There was a Black Hills technician on the scene and he wanted us here to vent. They were getting some pretty high readings when they first went in. They were getting like 13 parts per million and they evacuate at five, so we were pretty close to losing the building.”

Daly says they didn’t have to evacuate any nearby businesses…

“We didn’t do that. We did kill power right off the bat. Alliant came down and dropped the transformer bank out so we didn’t have to worry about none of that in there, so.”

Daly says they were looking into the exact source of the gas leak…

“I don’t know exactly all the details there, but it was right around the water heater. This could have been a pretty bad deal then, actually. Yes. If nobody would have noticed it for a little bit longer, we would have had a big pile of brick here.”

Firefighters were on the scene about an hour.
