The Lakes Area Hockey Association has now entered the second phase of construction on a new ice arena located in the northwest corner of the Bedell Family YMCA in Spirit Lake. Association President Mitch Brandt says the second phase involve a large quantity of foam. “As we were finishing our phase one, which was putting up the building shell, our phase two is the refrigeration system and the flooring, got a call from JJ at Consumer Lumber wanting to know how they might be able to participate or help us in the project. We need to get about a thousand sheets of foam and we thought this might be a way to start a fund drive in order to do that. And they established a good price for the project at 20 dollars a sheet plus they’ll throw in every tenth sheet into the program. So great appreciation to them for stepping up, seeing the project and wanting to participate in helping to get it completed for the communities around.”
Brandt notes that the Hockey Association is a non-profit, so contributions are tax deductible.
“Contractors can do it through Consumers, they’re all set up to handle it. They’ll record everything that needs to be done. The same way goes for the public themselves if they want to stop in and buy one, two, three, five, ten sheets of foam for us and do it right there. Or if they would like to make a contribution in general they can go to our website which is www.lakeshockey.com.”
Brandt adds that for this winter the facility will be flooded to create ice, weather permitting.
“We’re doing some work inside there to get our lighting and then fabricate a rink so we can hopefully be able to flood in there and get some ice so it will just be awesome if we can kick it off during the Christmas break to be able to have skating in there.”
The ice arena project is expected to be fully finished by October of 2013.
