(Spirit Lake)– A recent event to raise funds to help with the renovation of the historic shelter house at Mini Wakan State Park is being described as a huge success.
Organizer Jim Howard says the first annual “Opry at the Sami” brought in nearly 12-thousand dollars. The event was held in conjunction with the 29th annual University of Okoboji Games.
The project has a total estimated cost of about a million dollars.
In 2008 grants of 100-thousand dollars from the Okoboji Foundation and 5,600-dollars from the Dickinson County Endowment Fund were received. They’re hoping the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will pick up a portion of the tab as well.
The Spirit Lake Protective Association, which is spearheading the project, is still taking donations. They may be sent to the Spirit Lake Protective Association, Mini-Wakan Shelter, P.O. Box 95, Spirit Lake, Iowa…51360.
